Disney's The Little Mermaid

When I was a young girl, one of my absolute FAVORITE movies was (and still is) Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

Guess what!  It will be available for the first time on Blu-ray Combo Pack and HD Digital on October 1st!

The Little Mermaid!!!

I was thrilled to be able to review an advance copy of the movie with my daughter (Savannah in the middle) and her best friends, Kinley and Madelyn. Notice Savannah’s Ariel dress? Yeah, she would give anything to be that little red headed mermaid princess.

Unironically, Ariel reminds me so much of my Sav: She is smart, independent, determined, curious, a dreamer, a good friend, a problem solver, and rebellious at times.

There are many valuable lessons that can be learned from Princess Ariel, such as:

- Always follow your dreams

- Stand up for what you believe in

- There is always a reward or consequence for every decision you make

- Every woman needs her own voice

However, watching this movie as a Mom has completely changed the character with whom I can most relate.  Enter, King Triton (Ariel’s father).

Important lessons I have learned from King Triton:

- As loving parents, we have a deep desire to protect our children from harm at all costs. The world can be a scary place! But as much as we may want to, we cannot keep our kids in a bubble. We must learn to let them go, to give them wings to fly (or in Ariel’s case, legs to run). This has been a particularly difficult task for me this week as ALL FOUR of my 6 year olds (quadruplets) have started kindergarten! YEEEOUCH! Sometimes a task that is easier said than done...

- We must let our kids make their own decisions (the good AND the bad). Hopefully, they will learn from their mistakes, pick themselves back up, and be stronger than before.

- We must always give our children our unwavering love and support, regardless of the *bonehead decisions* they may make at times…

- And my favorite lesson from King Triton: If you mess with my kid, I’m going to come after you.

Heh, heh.

I am constantly telling my kids that they are SOOOO talented. They can be anything and everything they want to be. At this very moment, Savannah wants to be a: nurse, veterinarian, ballerina, teacher, artist, Mommy, and of course...

mermaid.

My daughter is 1 so I tell her that she is so smart and sweet. Sometimes I tell her she is a genius lol and that she is doing such a good job at something. I will do whatever I can to support her dreams as she grows and becomes interested in different things.

I encourage my little one by always listening. Whenever she says she wants to be something, I always encourage her to do so, but I also use it as an opportunity to encourage hard work and what it would take to become whatever she wants. She hasn't said she wants to be a mermaid, yet, so I will have to think on that one about how she can accomplish that goal. Maybe marine biology?

How hard it is to let them do their own thing...especially when they are little! Right now we're kind of "telling her" what to do. For example, she is taking ballet this year because it's what we decided to do...but if she wants to do something different, she can...with a tear in my eye! :-)

My b/g twins are only 3, so I tell them as often as I can: you are so smart, you can do anything you put your mind to, girls/boys can do anything boys/girls can do, and I will love you no matter what! I hope it prepares them to do things that make them happy, successful adults.

My son was a preemie and and a brain bleed which resulted in hydro and mild CP. He struggles sometimes with physcal tasks, but now that he is 4 I see him struggle with some mental/school related things too. I just am always there to give him an encouraging word, and we praise each and every accomplishment. My daughter is 2 and I have found myself doing he same with her. praising all of the accomplishments, and just making sure to tell them both they are wonderful just the way they are,and can do what their little hearts desire.

Delightful post! I love Disney!! We were frequent visitors there when my daughter was growing up. I encouraged her to follow her dreams by exposing her to everything I could. As a single mom on a very tight shoestring, my hope was to lead by example and show her that 'the world was her oyster'!
