When I was a young girl, one of my absolute FAVORITE movies was (and still is) Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
Guess what! It will be available for the first time on Blu-ray Combo Pack and HD Digital on October 1st!
The Little Mermaid!!!
I was thrilled to be able to review an advance copy of the movie with my daughter (Savannah in the middle) and her best friends, Kinley and Madelyn. Notice Savannah’s Ariel dress? Yeah, she would give anything to be that little red headed mermaid princess.
Unironically, Ariel reminds me so much of my Sav: She is smart, independent, determined, curious, a dreamer, a good friend, a problem solver, and rebellious at times.
There are many valuable lessons that can be learned from Princess Ariel, such as:
- Always follow your dreams
- Stand up for what you believe in
- There is always a reward or consequence for every decision you make
- Every woman needs her own voice
However, watching this movie as a Mom has completely changed the character with whom I can most relate. Enter, King Triton (Ariel’s father).
Important lessons I have learned from King Triton:
- As loving parents, we have a deep desire to protect our children from harm at all costs. The world can be a scary place! But as much as we may want to, we cannot keep our kids in a bubble. We must learn to let them go, to give them wings to fly (or in Ariel’s case, legs to run). This has been a particularly difficult task for me this week as ALL FOUR of my 6 year olds (quadruplets) have started kindergarten! YEEEOUCH! Sometimes a task that is easier said than done...
- We must let our kids make their own decisions (the good AND the bad). Hopefully, they will learn from their mistakes, pick themselves back up, and be stronger than before.
- We must always give our children our unwavering love and support, regardless of the *bonehead decisions* they may make at times…
- And my favorite lesson from King Triton: If you mess with my kid, I’m going to come after you.
Heh, heh.
I am constantly telling my kids that they are SOOOO talented. They can be anything and everything they want to be. At this very moment, Savannah wants to be a: nurse, veterinarian, ballerina, teacher, artist, Mommy, and of course...
mermaid.

ReplyDeleteBy letting her dream, run and play! :)
ReplyDeleteI always tell my son to be the best he can be and always keep God first in your life and all our dreams will come true.
ReplyDeleteI always encourage my child no matter how silly the dream is. we always talk about his dream and talk about how he can get to his dream :)
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is 1 so I tell her that she is so smart and sweet. Sometimes I tell her she is a genius lol and that she is doing such a good job at something. I will do whatever I can to support her dreams as she grows and becomes interested in different things.
ReplyDeleteI encourage my little one by always listening. Whenever she says she wants to be something, I always encourage her to do so, but I also use it as an opportunity to encourage hard work and what it would take to become whatever she wants. She hasn't said she wants to be a mermaid, yet, so I will have to think on that one about how she can accomplish that goal. Maybe marine biology?
ReplyDeleteencourage. encourage. and encourage. right now my 5yr old wants to be a cowgirl when she is bigger.....we are city dwellers to the core but there's no way i'm telling her that :)
ReplyDeleteEunice eunepuney(at)gmail(dot)com
I encourage my daughter to follow her dreams by being supportive of what she wants to pursue and letting her know anything is possible with hard work.
ReplyDeleteHow hard it is to let them do their own thing...especially when they are little! Right now we're kind of "telling her" what to do. For example, she is taking ballet this year because it's what we decided to do...but if she wants to do something different, she can...with a tear in my eye! :-)
ReplyDeleteMy b/g twins are only 3, so I tell them as often as I can: you are so smart, you can do anything you put your mind to, girls/boys can do anything boys/girls can do, and I will love you no matter what! I hope it prepares them to do things that make them happy, successful adults.

My son was a preemie and and a brain bleed which resulted in hydro and mild CP. He struggles sometimes with physcal tasks, but now that he is 4 I see him struggle with some mental/school related things too. I just am always there to give him an encouraging word, and we praise each and every accomplishment. My daughter is 2 and I have found myself doing he same with her. praising all of the accomplishments, and just making sure to tell them both they are wonderful just the way they are,and can do what their little hearts desire.
ReplyDeleteI encourage all three of my children to follow their dreams by being supportive of what they want to do. My youngest who's turning 3 next week wants to be a mermaid when she grows up. Even though my 5 and 6 year olds tell her that it's impossible, I told her she could be one if she wants - anything is possible :-)
ReplyDeleteNo matter how crazy or off the wall an idea is I help my kids put the idea to life. I want to allow them to feel what success is and that no dream is too big or too small to accomplish. if we believe in them, they will learn to believe in themselves.
ReplyDeleteI also LOVE the Little Mermaid!! I always tell my kids they can be whatever they want to be...after they go to college, of course. ;)

Trying to build her up and teaching her to follow Christ. Such a hard lesson to let go and let God.
ReplyDeleteWe allow them chances to explore and have different experiences.
ReplyDeleteI encourage her to follow her dreams by providing a loving and supportive environment in which she feels comfortable to try new things and to reach outside of her comfort zone.
ReplyDeleteI encourage my daughter by letting her make her own choices. She is 4 and can be gently guided in the right direction but will ultimately choose what makes her happy. jimandmandycoker@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI pray a lot for those decisions they will make and hope God is going to draw them to himself. This parenting thing is not easy!
ReplyDeleteI allow my three daughters to try new experiences. My 9 year old has played tennis, softball, and soccer. She finally decided soccer is her favorite. My 7 year old has played softball and now is a cheerleader. I try to allow them the opportunities so they can learn what they enjoy and what they are good at.

ReplyDeleteDelightful post! I love Disney!! We were frequent visitors there when my daughter was growing up. I encouraged her to follow her dreams by exposing her to everything I could. We didn't have a lot of money, but we sure had a lot of fun adventures and learning experiences. As a single mom on a very tight shoestring, my hope was to lead by example and show her that 'the world was her oyster'!

ReplyDeleteI think it's important not to apply unnecessary or arbitrary limits - I try never to tell a child not to do something without also explaining the reasons for the restriction.
I encourage them to meet many different children and try many activities, be socialized for the real world
