I had originally made plans to travel with my parents to Houston for Mom’s 2nd round of chemotherapy. After completing routine blood work, the MD couldn’t risk treating Mom with her platelets at such a dangerously low level. They will try again next week.
In the meantime, Mom has been losing a tremendous amount of hair (a common and expected side effect to her chemo). I drove to Waco for the weekend to love on Ma and accompany her to the beauty salon for support.
She was cracking me up---laughing SO hard at all of the wigs that Robert would try on her. (Robert and Linda have been cutting/coloring Mom’s hair since I was a baby girl- good people).
Here we go… deep breath…

No more long strands of hair falling in her face at night, when she showers, when she sits down or walks across the room…
This is Mom’s “new-do” on loan until her own, personal wig arrives.

Even Shi dawg approved of Granna’s new cut and had to give her some wet, sloppy kisses.
I absolutely HATE cancer, y’all. My heart aches for all of you out there who are experiencing this horrible disease in one way or another. Fight on, my friends---and thank you so much for your prayers and well wishes for Mom.
Tis only a small blip in a LONG and beautiful life, sweet woman.

ReplyDeleteKeeping your Mom in my prayers and admiring her bright spirits and determination. I know when my husband was diagnosed they told me when one person in the family gets diagnosed, the whole family has cancer. Hope your Dad is doing well - it's often difficult for the fellas too.

ReplyDeleteI am a radiation therapy student in Oklahoma and we see this all of the time! Personally, I believe shaving what is left when a person's hair begins to fall out is less traumatic than leaving it and watching it go in clumps! I am glad to see that your Mom did this - her temporary wig looks great on her! I have been checking back for updates occasionally, hate that she has to go through this!

ReplyDeleteSaying a prayer for your sweet mama right now. My dad had cancer my senior year of college and he beat it. A year after being diagnosed, he walked me down the aisle…cancer free (not just in remission but gone). we got almost 12 more years before a totally different kind hit him in May of last year. Sadly he lost that battle and went to be with Jesus in September. So I HATE cancer with you. But I wanted to give you my dad's success story to know that success can happen.

ReplyDeleteI was visiting at my parents house one day when I walked into the kitchen and saw my dad looking out the window at my mom on the patio. She was shaving her head and dad was in tears. I had never seen him cry before. It is a horrible experience for the patient to go through, and gut wrenching for the family that can't make everything better. I wish your family hope and peace. My mom is 5 1/2 years cancer free now. I wish your mom the same health and miracles.

I just wanted to say, your mother looks beautiful with her crew cut. It shows off her eyes and beautiful smile. Her twin should get one too!

ReplyDeleteawww. makes me teary eyed, these photos. i went through very same thing with my mom, with breast cancer. losing her hair was probably the hardest things for her, especially when it came out in handfuls and seemed to be everywhere. she was surprised how hard it was on her. we did wig shopping prior, and had similar laughs like you and your mom. its been 5 years and she is cancer free. her journey has made us apprecaite her all the more and left us compassionate and prayerful for those walking similar paths. it changes you. keep being close to your mom, ive learned how much a mother appreciates her daughters love and presence during these hard months of treatments. and it was a privilege to walk alongside her to encourage her along like she has/had done for me all along.
