30 compressions, 2 breaths!

Here, I made it easy for you...take 2 minutes to watch this and save a life!
This is a great video...however, the new recommendation is 30 compressions to 2 breaths!

(For those of you readers who feel compelled to comment on this post with additional or conflicting advice, please know that this video is just a short, general video and in no way should take the place of a formal, American Red Cross instructed infant CPR class. And, YES, as of October 17, 2007 at 1:21pm, the current American Red Cross ratio for infant CPR still stands as 30 compressions to 2 breaths. I called them to verify.)

30 compressions...2 breaths!!

Suz,
Hope you are getting some peaceful sleep at night after your nightmare experience. So grateful for God's providence in the video monitor, prompting you to run upstairs, giving you the wisdom and calmess to do exactly what Savannah needed, etc. Maybe you should contact the video monitor people - you would be a great testimonial!
Love ya, girl!

PS Loved your comment the other day - we are driving people NUTS! =) Don't you LOVE secrets?

The only thing is that the video says to "check for signs of circulation" but never REALLY tells people what that is... That would be a brachial pulse and perfusion. However, as a Ped ICU nurse, I highly recommend like you, Suz, that everyone takes a class through the American Heart Association or the Red Cross. This video is a great little reminder for those who have forgotten some of their skills who have had the class... I hope and pray you never have to use it again, Suz! You all are so adorable! CONGRATULATIONS!!

Thanx for the help. I have known how to do this, but I'm sure would forget in such an event that happened at your house! I enjoy your posts and pics so much. I know there are days I feel overwhelmed with my almost 3 year old and 4 month old, so I just think of you and say a prayer of thanks for you and your hubby who have a beautiful, yet crazy task of raising 3 great kiddos who will hopefully one day, choose God live life fully!

whoops, i meant 4 great kiddos! ;-) My bad!

There are new recommendations for infant CPR. 15 compressions ... 2 breaths. We just took a course at the hospital and the nurse said the 30 compressions were too exhausting for people o the RedCross has changed their ratio. 15:2 is still exhausting but much more possible for the average person.

We did two cycles like this and doing the compressions deep enough made this very exhausting as well!

thanks for the video.

....and i lover your disclaimer! :) just covering your butt, right?! :)

thanks again

My bad...."lay" rescuers should NOT check for signs of circulation according to the AHA (only healthcare professionals - which is the course I certify on every 2 years) OOPS. They should immediately begin compressions according the AHA guidelines. So, the video is somewhat accurate! SORRY!

I can't believe people are correcting the video info. even with your disclaimer!

Suz - You are my hero!!! I'm so sorry that we live in a world where you have to put a disclaimer about comments on YOUR PERSONAL BLOG!!! (and then people STILL feel the need to correct you....ugh!! You handle those things so gracefully!) The 6 other Steece's in your house sure are lucky to have you as the family CEO! Thank you for sharing your world with us. God has truly blessed you, and I want you to know that you have blessed me in more ways than I can count (even though we don't know each other)! I look forward to meeting you one day - and if it doesn't happen here on Earth, I have no doubt that we will be united in Heaven and that we will share many, many laughs!! Until that day - Keep doing whatever it is that you do that keeps your light shining for HIM!! Love ya girl!! Kiss those babies for me!!

Well done on posting the video - too many people just don't know what to do.

Not sure if this is the case in the US, but about a year ago in Australia the ratio of 30:2 was made the same for everyone - adults, children and babies. So now there should be no argument - and no difficulty remembering how many compressions to give who.

Hope you're all doing a lot better.

Thanks so much for posting that video-I have to certify every 2 years, but since I've never used it, it's easy to forget. I've written 30:2 on a post it and stuck it in a few convenient places around the house. I'm so glad God was guiding you that night-I can only imagine how horrifying it must have been! Thanks again for the video!

Thanks for the reminder. I'm pretty sure I would totally freak out and be breathing so hard there's no way I'd be able to hear if my child was breathing or not during those 10 seconds you're supposed to listen for it. Hope all is well with you and your bunch.

Wow... Mother's intuition/God's intervention, I'm just glad your daughter is okay! Poor baby, that wedge looks like a crazy setup! I hope her reflux improves over the next few months. You did a GOOD job. You saved your daughter's life. Thanks for posting that video for everyone and it still is the 30:2.

If you can't get ahold of a step-by-step sheet I work in a NICU and would be happy to mail you one. You can copy it and put one on the fridge, tape to the changing table/crib, etc. I'm so glad she will be okay, and prayers for her scared-to-death momma too!

Hi, I have been keeping up with your journey for several months now. I found a link to your blog on one of my friend's sites. First of all I want to say congratulations to you and your husband on four beautiful babies! Secondly, thank you for sharing your story. After reading about the incident with Savannah I realized that I was the only one in the house that was CPR certified. I am a dental hygienist and it just so happened that we were renewing our certifcation this week at work. I quickly jumped at the chance and signed my husband up! He is now "healthcare" certified in adult and infant CPR. Priceless information as you know. Thanks again for the reminder!!!

Oh my goodness I am so glad your precious baby girl is ok! I was shocked to read these last two posts. Thank you for the reminder on the infant CPR. I need to take a course for sure.

I am back in town and I will be emailing/calling before the end of the week to get a date down for you guys. Praise the Lord that Savannah is safe!

Blessings,
Ruth Williams

Thanks Suz,
That was extremely helpful. My friend who is a registered nurse taught me how to give CPR to an infant but since then I've slept and forgot how to do it. Thanks for informing us. Hope you guys are doing good.

Thanks for the video. After the day we had yesterday it is good to feel prepared. Stuff happens so fast with these little ones. Again, we are keeping you all in our prayers! -Jen

Suz -- First of all I'm glad your baby girl is alive. Kudos to you!

Just some information. The information taught in classes by the Red Cross vs. American Heart Association isn't always the same. The American Red Cross has changed their ratio to 30:2 for EVERYONE. Not just babies. My mother teaches for the Red Cross in Nebraska, so I'm pretty up to date on that. AHA might recommend something different. But yes, everyone should take a class and get certified!!!!

"Be strong and courageous and do not be afraid, the Lord goes with you each and everyday." This song came to mind when reading your last entry. How true that He was with you and guiding you through your ordeal, what a testimony! I found your blog through a friends blog.

Suzanne, We don't know each other but I have checked your blog for months now. I love all the wonderful blessings you have received. Actually, a friend of mine gave me your site. Hope you don't mind. I'm a 29 year old mother of 2 girls age 4 and 11 months. When I read your post about Savannah's incident, my heart absolutely stopped!! That is my worst fear...something happening to my family. Your story touched me and this video is the best gift any mother can receive. We always need a refresher course especially when we have kids. Thank you for taking the time to post the video...even more so since I know time is not something you have abundance of!! Enjoy your babies as they grow too quickly! Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks for posting your story. If it inspires people to check it out and take classes or recertify it is well worth it. You are doing so well with those four adorable angels at home with you. Enjoy every moment. No more scares like that one!

The hospital where our boys were born makes every parent take cpr before the baby can be released, I think all hospitals should. We made sure everyone who would be alone with our boys had taken the class. People were happy to do it, even all the grandparents. You just never know with little ones.

THANKS!

Since you seem to know this kinda stuff... could you post a link as to a similar video for toddlers/small children? Say, over one year? Just to keep me up to date for my kids until I get to take a formal class... Don't feel obligated. I am a big girl and can find it myself I guess! :)

Suzanne,

Hey chica!!! Congratulations!!!! This is Julia Hunter... well Julia Therrell now. My mother and your mother have been talking and I have been getting updates on how you are. I have tried to get hold of you, but couldn't until today. A friend I work with was on your website and she told me to come look at these adorable babies. Well... Guess what! They are your adorable babies. I freaked out. I finally found you. I am so happy for you both! It has been such a long time. How is everything? Tiring I am sure! I saw you on the news. What's up famous! Anyways. I will be back to see the babies progress. When you are up and ready, I would love to see you all. My husband, Adam and I live in Dallas, and I am a sixth grade language arts teacher at Williams Prep. Who would have ever thought!!!! Once again, I am so happy to finally find you all. They are absolutely adorable, and I can only imagine the happiness they bring to you. God bless you and your husband! email me if you get a chance or free moment, which I am sure are few and far between. julia1229@hotmail.com. You are awesome and you look great! All the best, Julia

The AHA recomends 30 compressions, followed by 2 breaths for everyone- adult, child and infant- but only for one rescuer. When a second rescuer arrives, that's when you switch to 15 compressions and two breaths...But only for children and infants. Adult compressions and breaths stay the same whether there is 1 or 2 rescuers. Dennis Clark
