"The Culprit"

Oh yes...this burb is a sneaky little automobile...do NOT be fooled by her innocent looking exterior...after one too many spit ups, car seat bases & double strollers roughing her edges, and continuous crying by four 6 month olds....she had- had enough!

It was a busy afternoon today. My friend, Tempe, and I took all four babies to the pedi for their monthly Synagis injections (to help fight against potential RSV). After 1.5 hours of undressing/dressing/weighing/examinations/injections/waaaaailing times 4...Tempe and I finally pulled into my garage with our "conked out" babies, exhausted from the day's festivities. (At this point, you might be wondering to yourselves: "It sure does seem like Suz is ALWAYS taking those kids to some appointment or another..." YES folks....YES I AM)

I turn off the ignition and set the keys by my cell phone in the drivers seat. As I open my car door, the other 5 doors unlock automatically (or at least, they are SUPPOSED to). I shut my door and reach for the door behind me to start the tedious task of pulling four babies out of the burb in their carseats.

---figured out where this is going yet?---

I pull on the handle...nothing happens...I pull again...LOCKED. I pull again and again and again and again and again (as if it is going to miraculously open on the 42nd try!). O.M.G. I think I repeated at least a billion times on each side. I feel myself starting to freak out, but immediately calm myself back down. THANK GOD IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL, COOL DAY and we were in the shade of MY GARAGE with four sleeping babies locked inside.

I call Joe's cell from Tempe's cell phone (seeing as how we STILL haven't changed our cell numbers from our Houston numbers!) I call his work phone from the house phone (yes...I had accidentally left the garage door unlocked--THANK GOD) I call Joe about 444 times from both phones on both of my ears...nothing. Finally I email his boss who always has his PDA with him and tell him to get Joe to call me immediately!

It worked...Joe made it home within 15 minutes and we got the kids out safe and sound. The babies slept until about 5 mintues before Joe got there....Ethan woke up screaming...which woke up Drew who began screaming...Sav woke up and kinda just looked around-wide-eyed...and Ben....well, guess what he was doing?...yep...FAST asleep. suprize suprize. ;)

So, I'm convinced my Suburban was getting us back for the torment she has been through in the past 6 months. (Little does she know that it is only going to get worse! Cheerios on the floor, spilled sippy cups, fighting over who gets to sit where)

Surely I did not lock the burb by accident! SURELY the keys did not accidently press the lock button when they were ever-so-gently placed on the seat. No, no...we have learned our lesson. Burb, I promise to give you more baths and take you out joy-riding every once in a while...just the two of us.

Every mother locks her child in the car at one point during their lives, right?...Whelp, I got mine over with today, in the safety of my own home and cool weather! Glad I got that out of the way! ;)

Bless your heart! We've all done it at some point...thankfully you were at home and they were sleeping! Once, I locked my keys in the car while it was running, but amazingly, I hadn't put the baby in yet!

yes...it has happened to every mom. I did it while my boys were awake with the car running. Good thing they were sleeping and that your husband made it home fast. Don't fret over it, we're just human!

I just thought I'd let you in on a little trick that actually works just in case the "Burb" decides to lock you out again...If you call your husband on his cell from your cell, and he has a remote on his keychain, he can hold the phone up to the remote, press unlock as you hold your cell up to the car, and your car will unlock. I know it sounds crazy, but I think it has to do with radio waves or something...You might have already heard about this but I just thought I'd let you know! I enjoy your blog! Sounds like things are going well!

Tell me you are done with appointments for a while?

Yep, I think it's a rite of passage! I let my 2yr old play with the keys and he ended up locking himself and his 11mos old (trached and oxygen dependent) sister in the car! Needless to say we had to call the fire department to come and break open the window because my husband works 45min away and with limited oxygen and a baby needing to be suctioned we had little time to spare.

Tina said...

Yep, I've done it!! And I was pregnant with my second, so there was no controlling the emotions. I ran next door to get them to call for the police to break into the car.

Aw, fond memory!!

Oh my goodness...what a day!!! Its a never-ending adventure, isn't it? I'm sure my day will come...hopefully, it will happen when the girls are too young to remember it! Hopefully, you have had a nice relaxing evening at home and recovering well from the day's events! You're an awesome mommy and a great inspiration to us multiples moms out there!

I can just picture it... your so tired.. you've just been through a marathon dr. apt, the babes are all sleeping, your needing coffee and wondering how your gonna make it through the rest of the day... then.. BAM, the BURB locks you out!!! I'm so glad they slept through most of it. I'm with Jen.. hope your done with apts. for a while.. you've got to be beat!

Thinking of you!

Oh no! I am so sorry you had to go through that today. It can be quite scary, but of course we all have to do it at least once. It is still nuts when it happens though! Thank goodness they were sleeping until the very end!

I have to say I am glad I was feeling well today, I don't think I would have been able to handle that. Don't worry moms do it all the time. The mom I nanny for did it once and had to call the police to get in and get her much younger child!!! It was the middle of the summer too...don't worry!!! You are an AMAZING mom, even after that!!!!!!!!!!! Love you, and they are complety unharmed by the whole thing!!!!

I have been following your story for sometime. Your story made me laugh! Last year I locked my child(i.5 years old) and the child I was babysitting (6months old), and my cell phone in the car at the library. I asked someone in the parking lot if I could borrow their phone and I explained what had happened. She immedietely dialed 911, and a team of 4 firemen came and unlcoked my car. I was for sure that CPS would be calling! But it all worked out!

I love reading your blog! Your kiddos are precious!

LOL! Yes, you need to treat the Burb better.
I take it Ben sleeps through anything? My daughter Emma can too. When her brother Will wakes up screaming (which is sadly more often than I'd like)she sleeps like there is nothing going on. LOL I wish I could do the same. UGH!

Been there...done that. No matter what the circumstances are, it is absolutely terrifying!

So glad it was not a hot day and that they mostly slept through it!

I once locked my then-two-year-old in my car WITH IT RUNNING!!!!!

Yup, worst mother of the year award, over here!!

Carol said...

Yep, most of us have done it. I have four children who are grown now and I'm sure I locked at least one of them in the car. And, my oldest locked ME out of the house as we came home from the grocery and I was bringing bags out of the car into the house. And, he had a dirty diaper. As I frantically went all the way around the house, hoping beyond hope that a door would accidentally be unlocked, I notice that he is calmly sitting in a big chair in the den reading his Richard Scarry book! The babies are getting more adorable by the day! Surely they will be the star of next year's cranial band calendar!

Hilary said...

Oh no! I'm glad that everything turned out okay and that the babies slept through it for the most part. I remember about 10 years ago, my neighbor accidentally locked her keys in her car with her baby and her mentally disabled 3-year-old at the post office. This was back in the day when not a lot of people had cell phones so she had to get somebody at the post office to call the police and help her break into her car.

Oh Gosh I know how you feel. I do not have kids of my own, but I was a nanny for 2 boys. They were about 6 months and 3 years old when I went home with the car , a Lexus SUV, and I shut the drivers door to get the baby out and then get Ryan out and the doors did not unlock as they were supposed to. It was in the summer but it was during the early evening, so I FREAKED out. The toddler could not get out of his seat and he could not reach the door lock, I was outside the window trying to explain to him how to get out of his seat. He could not do it and eventually started crying and the baby was already crying like crazy. I was on the phone with the police to try to get them to come and break into the car, one officer came and determined that he would not be able to get the lock undone without breaking the door, so we tried to think of other ways, until it finally occurred to me that there might be a key in the spare key box in the garage. Well low and behold there was the entire time. I unlocked the doors and grabbed the baby first and then got Ryan out and I hugged them and kissed them and cried because I was so upset. I could not let them go and I thought I was such a terrible person. I realized that no one is perfect when their mother finally came home and told me she has done the same thing. I know exactly how you feel but it makes you nothing less than normal and an amazing mother :) Take care.

ha......you are too funny. I know one day your kiddos will read these postings and laugh their heads off. You have such a sense of humor, a good natural one... now I know why you get through life so blissfully with quads. Laughter is the best medicine, so...do you think God allowed something crazy to happen so you could have something to laugh about and be reenergized?! :)
Ok, quad mom.....maybe you ought to pin a spare key to your bra or something just in case......it would ever happen again. Really, think about 4 quads as they get a bit older and figure out how to get out of their carseats... they will attempt to start the engine and rev it up, ho my, only Heaven knows what 4 kiddos would be tempted to do. hahahaha!
Im sure Joe put a spare somewhere on the burb just in case the burb would be a snicker again. I wish you the best of luck digging under the burb and looking for it and yanking it free.....
Blessings.....and praying for the appointments to slow down for your BEAUTIFUL kids. Keep up the amazing work!

i did the EXACT same thing about 5 or 6 months ago. i put my daughter in, stuck the keys on the console, went around to the driver's side, heard a CLICK, pulled on the handle 50 times and then started to freak! only my daughter was wide awake. it was summer time, too. poor baby! i had to pretend i was playing peek-a-boo with her while calling 911 on a stranger's cell. i'm suspicious now, though, because we have a white tahoe that looks very similar to yall's suburban. hmm...

I have learned that ONSTAR is the greatest! and all cars should have it. We (DH and I) own a service station it happens more then you think. I hate cars that have auto locks! Dangerous to say the least. If I want my car to lock I will lock it myself! You can take it back to the dealer and tell them to make it stop doing that! And it only gets better wait until you "forget" which kid is at what place! I have forgottn my son at boyscouts once and my daughter at basket ball. And I only have 2! they have turned out just fine! Well at least I hope so. We haven't ended up on Jerry Springer. "Insert eye roll here" YET!

I totally agree...I think every mom locks their kids in the car at least once. Being a mom is a busy and tough job, but so rewarding. And I only have 2! I cant imagine how I would handle 4. I also have to say that I love reading the blog. Im glad everyone is doing so well. I hope yall make it into the calendar.

Hey Suzanne, your vehicle looks pretty new so it might be OnStar capable ... if it is, I would highly recommend subscribing to it. It's about $19 a month and for how many times I have locked my keys in my car, it is sooo worth it. It has great other features also. I have used it to call the police when i thought someone was following me - and in an accident, it signals for help without you having to do anything. I know this sounds like a plug for onstar, but it really has helped me tremendously.

You've only done it once???? OHHH BOY, I'm guilty of it more than once. Just wait another year until you have all of the kids out at the park, and lock the keys in the car with the diaper bag stuck inside, snacks inside, all while you know you have a diaper to change. The many joys of mommyhood....

My 6 year old daughter is in love with your babies. She looks at your blog with me and giggles at their adorable smiles. THEY ARE SOOOO PRECIOUS!

Hi - Long time lurker(I just cant get enough of those sweet baby faces!) And yes, I locked my daughter in the car in the grocery store parking lot!! I tried to open every door (even the very back of my Jeep) hoping that for some reason one door didnt lock!! I felt like such a fool! My hubby was at a Ranger game, so I had to call my MIL and ask her to go to our house to pick up the spare key and then bring it to me. It was the longest half hour of my life - and my sweet daughter slept through the entire terrifying experience. Motherhood is awesome :)

A friend of mine locked her twin girls in the car in the middle of the summer Houston heat!! She was terrified. Too far from home, she finally had to break a front window to get to them. Yes, I think every new mother does something like that, you are not alone!

I locked my son in the car when he was 18 months old. He fell asleep in the car, and we were getting ready to go on a walk down at the beach. I pulled into a gas station to get a bottle of water, and since he was asleep, I figured I could keep the car running, with the AC on, and use the keyless entry to unlock the door. That didn't quite work out the way I wanted it too, and my son was locked in the car, asleep, but had the ac running. His dad was out of town with my extra key, so I had to call the fire dept. (that was right next door.)
So, you are not the only one :) It happens!!

Anonymous said...

The ONLY reason why I haven't done this is because the second row doors on our Tahoe do not ever lock, unless we manually push the lock over. There's something wrong with the system, but I've been so thankful for it many times when I've heard the locks click, but I was still able to get to my son because his door wasn't locked. I've told my husband we aren't getting it fixed until our son is old enough to know how to unlock the doors himself. :)
My best friend's son locked her out of the house one day. He was only 2 at the time and he didn't know how to unlock the door. She didn't have a spare key anywhere and her husband was out of state on business. She ended up having to call the cops. Her son was in hysterics the whole time. She kept trying to talk to him through the door to calm him down. The cops had to break down her door to get in. She now has spare keys hidden everywhere. The joys of being a mom!

We locked my niece at 9 months old in the car sitting at the grocery store. The store called 911 and it took almost 45 minutes to get the doors unlocked. She sat there staring at us like it was a game for the longest time until the firemen showed up and then she got worried. Its such a scary moment! Glad everyone is all right and girl it so happens to everyone!

Haven't commented in a while, but I have been keeping up! The babies are just precious, and seem to be so happy, how could they not be with parents like you and Joe! Locking the car doors is scarry. One day my sister in law went to pick up her little girl from Mother's day out at church and her little chiquaqua jumped on the door handle and locked the doors before she could get her little one out of his car seat in the back. This was a shut front door, open back door, but she had layed the keys on the console because we live in a small town and locking the doors weren't necessary, or so she thought! She was very shook up, but everyone was ok! I learned from her to always get out of the car with keys in my hands and not to lay them down. Glad everyone was ok, what a story to remember! Keep up the good work and thanks for the posts and pictures! Your friend in East Texas, Pam.

Hi, I locked myself out of my apartment (taking out the trash) with my 10 month old baby awake inside and the door to the balcony open...(thats what slammed the other door shut)
Baby crawled to the door, crying for me and knocking, otherwise I would have broken the door down.
My neighbour climbed up to the balcony (2nd floor) and let himself in that way. Very long 10 minutes...
Guess you shouldn't take out the trash...

Welcome to motherhood. I did a similar thing with my firstborn. Locked her in the car at the doctor's office the very first time I took her out by myself. Fortunately, my husband was working nights at the time. Had to call and wake him up to bring me the keys. Since this was before cell phones being so prevelant, I had to leave baby in the car and go to the MD office to call hubby. That was almost 19 years ago. She didn't suffer any ill effects. Gave us a great story to tell over and over though!

Hello Suz, I've check in on your site everyone once in a while, just to see how cute the kiddos are... boy they are growing & oh so very sweet!! I can relate to your recent story. I did it too. My son was 8 weeks old, it was our first outing by myself with him. It was also pretty warm, he was born in July. I had stuck the keys in the diaper bag (inside the car) , I went to open the trunk to get the stroller & the wind caught my door, shut it.... locked!! I had no cell phone, nothing!!! My son was awake, not crying... but looking around... I had to flag down a passer by & call the police. I was SO very nervous, it was the longest 5 min in my life. I had a tow truck driver that heard the call & got there right away. You can bet from now on I keep those keys in my hands or pocket.... Again, your children are precious.... I love watching them grow. You & your hubby you should be so proud!

I did it when my girl was just a few weeks old, and it was FREEEEEZING cold outside! my husband had that look on his face, contemplating murder, as she woke up and started to scream inside! so here she was screaming, I was crying, he was yelling at me, and half an hour later the rescue people came opening up our car at some hideous charge... so yes, it happens to all of us. glad nothing happened to you guys!!! :)

Anonymous said...

Yes we have all done it. I locked my toddler in the car on a hot day while we were at the mall. The back door shut on me and my keys and cell phone were in the back seat. He was screaming from being hot, thirsty, and eventually hungry. I had to stop a stranger and ask to borrow their cell phone to call my husband. I felt like the worst mother in the world. Because the entire time he is crying he is yelling momma and then daddy.

I think we have all accidently done this. The first time it happened to me I had just put panties on my daughter as we were trying potty training. I was so scared about what she was going to do inside the car and the mess I'd have to clean up.
I did learn from my sister and her "accidents" that 911 takes this very seriously even if your child is not in immediate danger. My husband works way to far away to have gotten home in a reasonable ammount of time to unlock the doors so I called and the firetruck was at driveway in less than 5 minutes. My daughter had just figured out how to unluck the door as they turned down the street, so we ended up not needing them, but I was encouraged by how quickly they responded.

Tracy said...

Oh no. Yes, we all have done that at one point...well, kind of. I haven't locked my son in the car...but I did lock myself out of the house one time with him inside...by himself...and he was 1 1/2 years old. Nice. It was a Sunday morning. I should have been at church...I guess this was God's way of teaching me a lesson. My husband was out of town. Everyone I knew, that had a key, was at church...where they should have been! My son was crying and screaming "Momma" at the front door. I could hear him trying to open it. He just couldn't figure how to unlock the deadbolt. I called 911. !! The firemen came out, I also called a locksmith (expensive to do on a Sunday and tell him to come asap!). The firemen tried to break into my house, but couldnt without breaking windows. So we just sat and watched as the locksmith had to end up drilling holes in my door (it wasnt as simple as just playing with the deadbolt and getting it to unlock). Anyways...that's my story. ...and we all lived :)

Sorry, I wrote a book on your blog :)

Anyhow, I'm 23 and I'm having laporoscopic surgery in a few weeks - a friend of mine knew I was a little upset about it, so she sent me the link to your blog and told me she thought it'd be inspiring for me :) --- It is. It just makes me happy to see you had four babies, even though you had endometriosis, too. It runs in our family, and most of the family has kids - but not my older sister. So it's scary, and your story truly helps me- just knowing there is hope! I do trust God and I pray a lot, so I know He'll make it all happen the way it should, but at the same time it's always nice to see other people with such beautiful results :) Your babies are beautiful, and so are you and your husband! I can't stop reading your stories :) Hopefully I'll have my own baby stories to tell one day :) Thanks so much for your inspiration. And sorry my note is so long :)

I think every mother does it at some point. I did it when my son was 9 months old. I got out to pump gas and accidentally left the keys in the car. The car automatically locks after 10 seconds. So in August, at 4 in the afternoon I ran inside the gas station to have them help me break my window open. They made me wait for 911. The fire truck, ambulance, and finally a locksmith came. It felt like an eternity, but in reality was 20 minutes. When I pulled him out he had been crying, (with me) and was soaked in sweat. It was one of the worst days as a mom. I felt so guilty, and got rid of that car. So, yes, you are so lucky that you were in the shade in February. Woo Hoo! Everyone makes mistakes. Even moms.

well, suz this is Kelly and I have never written you, but I am from Bryant, AR and I understand your pain except that I was trying to transfer my sons car seat and had sitting in the drivers seat of my Tahoe and I had the keys in hand well I sat them down on the backseat where I was trying to get the car seat out and turned to sit the seat on the ground and when I did the wind slammed the door shut and he happen to hit the lock button on the drivers door almost instantly!!! Talk about freaking out!!!! We were at McDonald's in Bryant with some friends so she called the police to see if they had one of those things to open the door and they told her sure they would be there in just a minute. Well, the next thing you know we hear sirens from 50 directions...yes you can figure this one out real quick. They were coming to unlock my car. It was sooooo embarassing. My little one who was only one at the time thought it was cool all the attention and had his face on the glass making faces at them. It was one of those times you cry then and laugh histerically at it now.
