Can You Feel the Burn?

uh...YES!

Here lately, I have been completely lethargic...feeling blah...lots of headaches...gaining a couple of LB's here and there...(I might need to look into my new Yaz Rx, Sarah! Thanks for sharing) You see, at the first of the year, I went through our budget and was able to cut several things out and lower bills, etc.---One of these budget cuts was Suz's membership to the gym. (not a smart move!)

So, I'm trying to get back on track! And I'd love to tell you that I am self-disciplined enough to run around our neighborhood or lift weights at home...ya, not so much. I NEED that group environment--those group classes with an instructor cheering me on! I really push myself to the limits in those situations.

Yesterday I un-froze my membership account and what better way to celebrate than to attend my very first SPIN CLASS, after months of inactivity!

This picture is an example of what a Spin class looks like...notice the looks of absolute exhaustion! It was pure GREATNESS! I loved it! Quickest 60 minutes of a workout I have ever experienced.

I'm excited about the Zumba class as well! Dancing AND getting an intense workout? Where do I sign up??? I'll have to let you know how it goes! What are some of YOUR favorite workouts/classes?

Thank you SO much for all the comments yesterday. I want you to know that I (and many others) went through every single word written and prayed specific prayers of healing, peace, praise, and strength for every person mentioned and will make a trip back to that post every week to pray over you guys.

Zumba is the BEST EVER!!!!
I go 3x a week and I have lost 30 pounds since starting it! You are going to LOVE it!:) Side note though....give it 4 or 5 times before you decide if its something you will stick with..it takes that long to sorta get the foot work.:) Have fun!

I absolutely LOVE Zumba! It is so much fun and an awesome workout! I always feel throughly satisfied afterwards. I also love water aerobics, I do that once a week and Zumba 3 times a week, the water aerobics is a good workout as well, you don't feel as tired but you know you did a good thing.

You GO GIRL!!! I got back into a work-out routine at the beginning of January and I always feel so refreshed after a class. I'm dying to try a SPIN class, but have mostly stuck to Cardio Kickbox and such.

Hi Suz! I LOVE the spin class at my gym. Our instructor goes for about an hour and 15 minutes but it's still great. Good job, you!

MY HERO! Just the mention of a spin class send chills up my spine (and not in a good way). Keep up the great work girl!

I started Jazzercise at the beginning of the year and I love it. I completely agree with you, dancing and getting a workout is the way to go!!

Yay, Zumba! I second the comment that you should give it some time - it's a little awkward at first, but so much fun!

I walk around my neighborhood! It's pretty exciting exercise because I might even see a deer or two. Maybe it's not all that aerobic, but it's uphill part of the way in the cool, crisp mountain air!

Zumba is great!!! Give it a couple of times before you make your official decision on it, b/c if you are anywhere close to being as uncoordinated as I am, then it will probably take you a couple of classes to get the steps down, but I love it! And I totally understand the need for the group environment. I am the same way. Even if it's a bunch of little old ladies in my water aerobics classes, I need the accountability.

As for exercise, I hate it. But, I have never tried a gym membership either. I have to think that I'm not working out - like dancing, or swimming, or WALKING. I love a walk on a brisk day - with a dog (that behaves on the leash).

That explains why you're in better shape than me. You look great - for a person who DIDN'T have four kids...at the same time. Go, Girl!

Miss you.

One question: Does your bum hurt from that spin class?!?! I have to wear my padded bike shorts to make it through an hour class... but it is totally worth it and so fun! Keep those rockin workouts going!

Suzanne said...

anon!!! YES!!! my butt bone is KILLING ME! gen mcnulty made fun of me and said it was b/c i had no padding back there....but YES! so, you would recommend the padded bike shorts?

Anonymous said...

Definitely! I bought some at Academy and they are life savers (or butt bone savers actually). Of course, you get used to the seat over time too, but I just slip them on under the shorts I'm wearing and it's great! Happy spinning :)

Hey Suz, Gen's friend Ali here. Sad to say, my sister-in-law teaches spin classes and I've never been. I've been chatting with Gen about joining her gym. That way we could stick the kids in the play room and sit in the sauna together! I'm not so big on exercise - wink!

suz, i highly recommend 30 Day Shred. I don't know if you have heard of it or not but it's from Jillian Michaels from the Biggest Loser. Amazing video, and everyone as well as myself have experienced great results. and it's only 20 minutes a day! I have a review of it on my blog if you woul dlike to read it. Good luck into getting back into shape :) It's empowering to the body and mind!

I'm an avid reader of your ever so wonderful blog coming out of hiding to tell you that Zumba is the best workout. I just LOVE it, I go with a few girlfriends and we've had so much fun learning the moves.

I've heard peeps rave and rave about Zumba! Hope you enjoy it.

My husband and I do Taekwondo 3-4 times a week, and I also do Bikram yoga weekly and try to run outside because we have some fabulous trails around here.

At Taekwondo, we are like the only couple there who does not have kids...it's hilarious. The family that kicks together stays together! We always joke with folks that we won't have kids until after we get our black belts (Nov 2010). We've met lots of wonderful families who home school and send their kiddos to TKD--we'd like to do the same. Someday.

If you have time (right!) I'd say try to fit in a yoga class here and there - for me its both relaxing and a good workout - I love the feeling of all of the stretching. I swear I feel taller after yoga class!

Zumba is beyond fabulous. Seriously. I lost 2 lbs after the first class.

I am with you. I HAD to rejoin my gym because I need that groupness too. I do Zumba, Body Pump and spin. You will LOVE zumba. It's sexy, fun and calorie burning all in one. Our leader at my gym is 7 months pregnant and she kicks all our butts! Good luck, have fun!

Good for you!!!

Suz,
There is a padded seat you can buy that you just slip over whatever bike you are on. I love it! My other fav is any of the Les Mills classes...Body Pump etc.

Jessica said...

Sounds like fun, but I don't know that I'm brave enough to try a spin class! Good luck!

I definitely recommend a padded seat...way more comfortable than awkward bike shorts. I just got certified to teach Spinning and I love it! That horrific feeling in your butt-bone will go away after a few classes though! Just stick with it and that first class will just be a distant memory! :)

Glad you enjoyed your class! I always work harder and get a better workout when it's a group thing. Not so dedicated at solo sports.

Talk to your Doc about the Yaz - could be contributing to the blahs, headaches, and weight gain. I turned into a raving psycho on the stuff! Starving, sad and weepy, and then the oh so fun screaming rage that would come out of nowhere.

Good luck!

I LOVE spin class!! I also adore kickboxing -- great work out and FUN! Sadly, I injured my foot at work and have been unable to work out for over 2 weeks now. :( So sad. Good for you for trying spinning!

Oh, I have a new found love for spinning. I've been working my butt off, literally since my twins were born last March. I started Weight Watchers in May and to date have lost 59.8 lbs!!!! I have been going to the gym since then, but just recently started the classes. I'm loving three spin classes a week, three circuits, a kickboxing and a bootcamp. To get a little relaxation, I throw in one yoga too!! I agree, the group environment is so much more motivating!!! I did purchase padded cycling shorts before I started spinning and have to say it is definately a plus!!

No problem at all! I have been off a Yaz for a little of 2 weeks and am feeling great, I haven't been having any problem this week! I was feeling so horrible that as soon as I found out it was my Yaz, I drank this aloe vera gel stuff to flush it all out of my system asap. Saturday was my last sign of any problems, I just thank God that I am back to myself!!! I would recommend changing your birth control before your symptoms get as bad as mine. If you want to read more about what I went thru it is all in my blog. Good luck Suz!

Suz I LOVE ZUMBA!!! I am teaching it 5 times a week at school and in LA fitness! You can burn up to 700 calories in an hour and it is soooo much fun. We must get together and I can teach you the basic moves... You will love it! I'll call you soon and we can arrange a meeting hahaha

JAZZERCISE!!! But I've heard great things about boot camps and spin!!!

Suz,

Have you ever tried Cardio Kickboxing? It's an AMAZING workout and burns even more calories than running and spinning if you do it right. No gloves, contact or bags - just choreographed moves to awesome music!

My brother teaches a few spin classes. There is no way I could do it, i'm WAY to out of shape.

I love ZUMBA too! It's SO much stinkin' fun!!!!

RPM and BodyJam! Those are my faves. My gym doesn't have Zumba but I've done it before...it's fun and all, but I'm such a Jam Junkie. RPM is the best indoor cycling class out there, in my opinion. If you liked the cycling class, get you some padded cycling shorts and some cycling shoes to clip in to the pedals, it will make the ride much better and smoother.

You should be so proud of yourself!! I definitely need to get to working out, but it is so much easier to just sit around and not! I am sooo weak after all that bedrest but do you see me doing anything about it? I haven't ever gotten a gym membership because I am not a good self motivator. I have to have someone to work out with. Way to go, getting out there and getting in shape!

Our church sponsors a professional aerobics person to come every day of the week and they only charge $2 a person to come... you should talk your church into doing something like that... the lady get's the $2 per person and the church loans the fellowship hall and everyone gets a 1 hour work out... sweet deal!
