Savannah, the Surgery Queen

4 surgeries within 6 months....yep, I'd say she's a *Surgery Queen*

Poor baby girl is back in the OR right now---her left kidney is getting a good work over. She definitely knows the drill and started screaming the second we walked in the hospital. Other times she screamed: taking her weight, taking her temp., blood pressure--(yah right! good luck with that!), trying to listen to her lungs, when an anesthesiologist just LOOKED at her!...you get the picture.

Lets not forget when the nurses had to pry her, kicking & screaming, out of my arms (AFTER she had the so-called "happy juice"--yah, doesn't work!)...screeeeeaming "Mamaaaaaaaaaaa, Mamaaaaaaaaaaaa" the whole way back to the OR--while I sobbed myself back to the waiting room where Joe was sitting...Oprah would call it: "the ugly cry". This NEVER gets easier...it has only gotten more and more difficult.

But again, thank the Lord for medical technology---and the hope that this will be the last of Sav's surgeries...at least for a while. Sweet baby girl. The surgery will take approximately 3 hours and we will be in the hospital with her for 24-48 hours. Tomorrow she will be wheeled upstairs for another round of those horribly, icky kidney tests (VCUG, Radioactive Renal Scan, etc)--but she will already have a catheter and IV- so I'm hoping that will help a little.

Thank you guys SO much for your prayers and sweet thoughts.

Sweet sweet Sav! I can't believe how much that little sweet girl has gone through just in the last 6 months. She looks so little standing in that hospital gown. Give her kisses from Auntie Liz and her besties!

Thinking of and praying for you. My daughter has another VCUG on 12/14, and we're hoping for some sort of positive news, but not holding our breath, given the duplicated ureter and VUR in all three.

Praying for you guys! Lets hope this is the last of her procedures for awhile. It is amazing how smart kids are!

My dad had severe burns on his body from a drunk driver when he was two and to this day he can't stand the smell of a hospital!

Suz, I've never commented on your blog but I was at Harding when you were. Anyway, my 7 month old daughter had a cysto/bilateral reimplant in October so I feel your pain. She had non-refluxing megaureteres. She is doing fine now but it was a big surgery for such a little thing. Sav will be just fine with some TLC! You're in my thoughts and prayers and I pray Sav has no further issues with her kidneys or otherwise.

We're rootin' for ya, Sav. Take it easy on your mom and pops from here out, ya hear?

At least give them a little breather...

Hi...I've been reading your blog from time to time and think you have such a beautiful family!! I can completely understand what you are going through with your sweet little angel. My daughter (that will be two on this Friday!) was diagnosed in the womb at twenty weeks with hydronephrosis of the left kidney. To make an extremely long story short, she has had five surgeries during her first year of life (another surgery queen too!). The first major one was at two months old on her left which is the bad side. She had a pyleoplasty and we ended up in the hospital for eleven days with that one. The next major one was the right side since that kidney started to get weak for compensating for the left kidney. Also at six months old, she was diagnosed with a heart murmur and atrial septal defect which will require surgery around age four. It sucks but she is a tough cookie!! She has had countless procedures: VCUG, ultrasounds, and she just had her fourth nuclean renal scan (we hate those!!). But she is doing fabulous and you could hardly tell everything that she has went through. We see our urologist every six months and we have another renal scan and ultrasound to be scheduled sometime in the spring. I completely understand how draining, hard, and frustrating all of this is. And you're right, it never gets easier! But you are not alone!!! I will keep your sweet little girl and your family in my thoughts!!! She will get through this and be just fine! =)

Poor Sav & Poor Mama!!! I can't even imagine having to hand her off crying like that! Hope this is it for her...you all deserve a break!

Suzanne,
I am surprised they don't let you come stay with her until she is asleep. We have had to do a couple of procedures with Sam at Children's Hospital Boston and they wheel me into the OR with him on my lap and I hold him until he is out. It has not been as traumatizing to him as I think it would otherwise be. Then they bring me to the recovery room prior to him waking up so I am there with him.
Anyways all that to say that I am praying for all of you and praying that you don't have to go through this EVER again!!! Praying for sweet Sav!!!

I can soooo realate to the screaming baby - the second we walk into the dr's office. and we've never had a surgery. My heart aches for you. Aches and aches. No mommy should have to go thru that. Praying for her swift recovery. and then I think you need a mommy recovery day!

cat said...

Here they actually let mommy go into the OR until they are done with the aneasthetic - it makes such a difference.

I am glad all went smoothly with her surgery...your post brought the tears on! God bless your little princess.
