Hopefully Sav’s FINAL Kidney Surgery

12 december 2011 461_thumb

Poor baby girl, who is currently running a fever with a cough, will need kidney surgery AGAIN on Wednesday, February 1st~ to correct a UPJ obstruction on her LEFT kidney (which has always been the “better” kidney). BUMMER.

Here is a very good interactive video of the procedure that she will undergo: a Pyeloplasty. Much more serious than the last 2 surgeries.

She has had a pyeloplasty on her R kidney—it was her very first surgery. The doctor was very bummed to see that she had developed an obstruction on her L side as well…especially since that is the better kidney (which isn’t saying much). He just couldn’t believe it. Apparently, Sav’s medical renal history is very rare and uncommon. (Not something you want to hear from a world-renown Pediatric Urologist)

(I had asked her to give me her “mean face” during her December testing)

*The GOOD news/ the SILVER lining, if you will:

She will NOT have a stent placed this time (due to anatomical changes after her previous reimplantation surgeries)…

so that means only ONE more surgery, NOT TWO!!! Yaaaaaay!!!!!

(Dr. Pinto laughed at me when I brought that up---that’s me, always trying to find a silver lining).

Other good news is that all of Sav’s previous surgeries have been successful and have fixed THOSE problems. This is a NEW problem. Once she has this surgery--- THIS SHOULD BE IT!  DONE.  FINITO. (I’ve never been able to say that before). So that’s a huge relief!

God is good and I have all the faith in the world that this operation will be successful---but that isn’t to say that I am stressed out of my mind, not sleeping, and slightly freaked out a bit. I just HATE HATE HATE this for her with all of my being. It is difficult to understand these emotions unless you’ve had problems with your baby needing multiple surgeries/treatments, etc. It sucks.

Thank you SO MUCH for all of your prayers and well wishes. It just means the world to us. Sav has watched her surgery on TV (Texas Multi Mamas Episode 3) and I’ve told her about all of the people praying for her.

These are our conversations about it:

Sav: “Are your work friends praying for me?"

me: “Yep!”

Sav: “Are Daddy’s work friends praying for me?”

me: “Yep!”

~then she runs through every member of our family and all of our friends~

me: “Yes Sav---and so many more! People who don’t even know you.”

~then she gets this huge grin on her face and just cuddles into my arms. God love her.

SO, from the bottom of our hearts…

Thank you and God bless.

Such a sweet heart! Praying for her surgery and that her cough gets better. We are all battling colds at my house and my infant was just diagnosed with RSV. It's going to be a long winter.

Been there I am praying I love you guys I am so sorry for all of this. I pray it goes a lot better than Kody's last one that had some scary moments.

Add me to that list of people praying!! Definitely hoping this is her LAST surgery!

Just out of curiosity - does the Dr have any explanation for her renal troubles? Does it have anything to do with her prematurity?

Poor Sav! It really stinks that she has had to go through all of this. I'll be praying that this is the last for her! I totally understand how you feel, too, as my son has had 3 sets of tubes and an adenoidectomy. Unfortunately, he seems to have inherited my family's chronic ear issues and I (nor his ENT) don't know when this will end. Stinks, but what doesn't kill us makes us stronger!

I will pray that this is her LAST surgery. I cried during the last episode whenever they showed you a, and her. I can't even imagine how difficult it must be. I tried picturing me in your shoes and my 10 month old in Sav's shoes, and I couldn't do it.

Sending up prayers for Sav! I know you are relieved this is the last surgery. My 1 year old has a blockage in her left kidney- hydronephrosis. As of now, we are hoping for no surgeries. We visit our ped urologist every 6 months now- it was every 3 for her first year. It has been scary- as I know you know. Praying for a successful last surgery and a quick recovery for your sweet girl!!!

Aww, poor Savannah, another surgery - will definitely be saying a prayer for her surgery. So glad that it will be her last! My daughter had two surgeries as a preemie infant (intestinal issues) and it was THE hardest time ever. I have to say, that it must be even harder for you the older she gets - I know that if my daughter had to have more surgeries as she got older, it would be even harder. My thoughts are with you guys - so glad you can see the silver lining!

Lots of love from NY... I cried watching her surgery on TMM. I have a little girl, and I can only imagine what you're going through. Stay strong!

I've been reading this blog for awhile now, and I watched the Texas MM today, all three episodes! The surgery brought me to tears. Sav is so strong and I love how much faith you have for her and the support group behind her and that your church is even there to be support. Absolutely amazing.

Yes, people who don't even know her are most definitely praying for her! My daughter has kidney reflux, but it's only Grade III, so we haven't had to go the surgery route, but I know how scary the testings can be. I'm praying for strength and peace for all of you.

I'm wishing you and Sav good luck and hopes for a very smooth and final surgery! What a cutie she is. :)

Suz - I've been reading your blog for years now. I think, maybe just a few weeks after the babies were born. I haven't commented before today, but I just wanted to let you know that I have always prayed for your kiddoes, especially Sav when she's having her surgeries.

As for the show. It's a hoot! My sister and I DVR it and love getting together to watch.

Many prayers coming to Sav. She is such a trooper and inspiration. I work at a hospital in Dallas and have adult patients not nearly as brave as her.

God bless that sweet child. I've read your blog for so long and just cried my eyes out watching her surgery on TV. We are sending prayers to Sav from Georgia!

Hi, I like many others have been reading your blog since the babies were born, not sure how I found it but your family is part of my weekly routine. I have been sending your love and light recently. I saw the first multi mama's and enjoyed it. I missed last week and I am wondering if there is anyway to download 3 and 4 before tonight, I got into some sites but I am afraid to download, anyone out there have words of advice on watching the shows online? Thanks!

Suz,

I really really hope this is her last surgery!

Suz - thinking and praying for your little one!

I'm an avid reader of your blog, and enjoy it's insights into raising multiples. I, myself, am a fellow North Texaner by birth. My best friend from College recently found out she is pregnant with sextuplets! Do you have any advice you could offer from a fellow mama of multiples? Her little blog is at http://laurenperkinsbaby.ourbabychannel.com/

Hope everything went well with the surgery!

watching TMM...Suz, you seemed like such a great person/mom from reading your blog all these years, but you're even more amazing in person! I wish I were you, seriously. You seriously are about as close to perfect as someone could be. I have 4 small kids and wish I had the patience/positivity/joy you had everyday! You seriously are an inspiration, girl!

Been reading your blog for years, I graduated from A&M in '05 and am from Arlington. I have been TiVo-ing & watching TMM in the middle of the night as I'm up feeding my son. I just want you to know what an inspiration your laid back, upbeat approach to parenting is. I'm only starting- my son is 3 wks old- but I hope I can have that same attitude. You are awesome & Joe and the kids are blessed to have you. Extra prayers going up for Miss Sav on 2/1!

Hi. I came across your blog from another blog that I follow. I have not seen the shoe but would love to start watching. My saon who is 3 months old has kidney problems. He has an obstruction in his ureter at the junction where it joins the bladder. He is having his first of 2 surgeries to fix it next week. I am so nervous.
Thank you for sharing your journey with Sav. I will keep her in my prayers.
