Reading Books and Building Blocks

Have you guys seen this new product on the shelves yet?

LEGO DUPLO Read and Build Play Set

It is super cool! We were asked by BlogHer and LEGO to review this product and had a blast while doing so. ~There will be a $100 LEGO gift card giveaway at the end of this post, so read on my fellow blog peeps!~

Let us show you how the LEGO DUPLO Read and Build Sets work!

“Grow Caterpillar Grow!”

I gathered my 4 eager participants and set out the various pieces.

I read the book aloud to the children…(these books are PERFECT for beginning readers~ simple, colorful, engaging)

…at the bottom of each page, the book clearly describes how to construct the characters in the story. I had each child grab a different piece and they had to look at the book and work together to figure out how the pieces fit together.

They were learning invaluable lessons: working together to accomplish a common goal, following directions, problem solving, etc.

The book had a wonderful storyline…and after the story was finished, the kids each had a little critter that THEY THEMSELVES created. Can you feel their pride?

Andrew and his little beetle bug

Savannah and her beautiful caterpillar

Ethan and his green frog

Ben and his red & orange snail

I had the kids act out the book with their individual characters. It was hilarious! They also practiced taking their critters apart and were able to reconstruct them by reading the book without my help! Awesome.

So, the next time you are trying to figure out what to take to a birthday party, what gift to give at holidays, etc.~ you should definitely remember the LEGO DUPLO Read and Build sets. It is a wonderful way to engage pre-school aged children with a book storyline. It also helps them to learn to read! SCORE!

Recommended age: 1.5 - 4 years

(*My kids are almost 5 and they LOVED this project! I think older children would benefit from these sets as well (ages 5-6). They can read the book independently and construct the characters without help)

Retail: $12.99 per set

3 different LEGO DUPLO Bricks and Books Sets:

Skills we used with the LEGO DUPLO Bricks and Books Sets:
  • Active listening
  • Following directions
  • Building/constructing
  • Working together with others
  • Problem solving
  • Interactive play
…while having a great time in the process!

Ohh This looks like a barrel full of fun! I teach 3-4 year old Pre K and I am always on the hunt for new ways to integrate reading/hands-on activity.

I believe it could help my kids read because it actively engages them as they read. The picture goes along with the story and helps them.

My kids are too old for these but I am going to keep it in my mind for my 3 year old nephew. I think they would help him learn to read because they are interactive and will keep him engaged.
Thanks!

I feel like the Lego Duplo read and build books will help my 9 yo who has sensory issues. He loves Legos and this would give him something to engage in while reading. I realize this product is recommended til age four. If this is below his level, this could be used as a fun way to transition into his reader books. melindajanvier@yahoo.com

I think it will help my daughter connect the words with the image of the lego character. It combines more than one sense which enhances her visual capacity to read!

We actually bought the caterpillar one for my youngest's first birthday. Even my 4 year old loves the set!

I have a nephew and as he gets older it is hard to keep his interest through a complete book. He wants to be "doing" instead of listening. Based on your review, this product looks like the perfect way for him to do both!

My little ones would LOVE this, they already love to create characters from just random books we read, this would be even better.

Tracy said...

I think these sets are wonderful for "wiggly" children who might otherwise have a hard time sitting still on mom or dad's lap to listen to a story. The process of building the animal gives them a way to be actively engaged with the text and requires them to listen closely for the part where their character is featured so they can construct it. Great job, Lego! Love these!

I don't know how this COULDN'T help a child to learn to read! These are so cute and encourage engagement and interactiveness while reading. Thanks for hosting!

April Jackson said...

I have an almost 2 year old and a 4 year old. This would be great for them to work together to build the characters and to sit still!! My 4 year old is very into reading right now so this would be great for her.

Kevin and Christen said...

interactive reading is a great way to build confidence and encourage kids to learn to read....mom reads (model), they build the characters (interactive), they retell the story (comprehension) and most of all they are having FUN!!

Kevin and Christen said...

yikes, not sure if my last comment was sent so I'll try one more time ;-) Mom reads (modeling), build characters (interactive), retell story using characters they built (comprehension). It's a GREAT way to encourage kids to read, but most importantly they are having FUN!!!

Very cool! Always looking for fun ways to help inspire my kiddos to read. I think this would really help capture their attention and help them focus! LOVE!

These really do look fun! My 4 year old is already thinking that the duplo blocks are for "babies", so since he is starting to read sight words, he might really enjoy this being able to read & do at the same time! I can't wait to try out the Vroom set!!

christiking said...

This would be great for my 2 year old!! Something just for his age instead of big brother's harder sets.

Jenny said...

What a great idea..and definitely perfect for little boys who don't have patience...like mine!

I think my son would like it because he can create something while reading..win win for mom!

JILL said...

My kids are too old for the Duplo sets (6 yr old twins)now but are fully 100% in love with Legos. So, I will comment as to how this would have helped our family in the corrent age group.

My son was reading by age 4, so this set would have helped him in reverse. He has autism and was very quiet, but loved reading. He also has some small motor hurdles and recevies OT. By having a Lego book he could read would have sparked his interest in playing with the Legos and therefore boosted his small motor skills!

In turn, my daughter would not have wanted to see her twin brother playing with something without her and the Legos would have helped spark her early reading skills.

I think that would have been classified as a win-win for us!

Zach and Alyson said...

My twin boys would have lots of fun with legos and they are really enjoying books at the moment. What a great combination!

Teej said...

My 13 month old son is a little young for this yet, but I can see how it would help him build many skills. He already loves interactive books and blocks. To be able to put reading together with listening skills and fine motor skills sounds great to me!

tjwallace04 at gmail dot com

Catherine said...

This would actually mean more for my 5 year old son to help build his fine motor skills. He loves books and to be read to, but he has low muscle tone. Because of the low tone, he isn't the biggest fan of building things or working on skills. I think this would encourage him to more willingly work on fine motor skills.

Mommy said...

Well, my son is only 2 so not yet at the reading stage BUT he loves books and legos. This will help him follow the story and he'll love the interactive plot.

Penny said...

This would be so neat to have in one of my kindergarten reading centers. It would excite them about reading the books and encourage story retelling~ an important reading skill. :)

Melissa Jackson said...

So cool! I can see how this would encourage kids to learn to read by actively engaging them in the process at an early age. For the "busy" and active learners, this is a way to focus them in on the book. I love it!

Beth C said...

My boys love legos, and they love reading books. These Lego books would definitely encourage them to pick it up and read them. It's a win-win combo!

Mom4Mom said...

I have four kids and my youngest will be the only one home with me when school starts this fall. I think these book sets would be perfect for him to play and learn with. He could use them for his "homework" when my older ones are doing theirs. He would love them!

Renae said...

Having fun while learing is the best way to teach children and to help them retain information at this young age. This LEGO game appears to engage both the parent and the child in the activity, which normally encourages the child to want to be active in what the parent is participating in. The pictures go along with what your reading which helps the kids form the words to match the photos. LEGO!!!

I remember the days of going to the library with my mom and filling up a BOX full of books every week, devouring them as soon as we got home. Although my son, Lincoln, is only 10 1/2 months old, I've tried actively engaging him in story time since he was born. He's already a bundle of energy, so the idea of being able to use his hands AND reading at the same time would use mental and physical energy, which I love!

I have kids w/sensory issues and ADHD - we have found it helpful for concentration at circle time at school to have a small handheld item that they can hold and fidget with that doesn't distract them or others - but helps them to focus on the lesson or story at that time. This sounds so cool! My little guy is too young to read on his own, but we're trying to find ways to engage him with the stories we read aloud. He loves taking apart his daddy's lego trucks (which are large and expensive and have many many small parts...). The larger lego blocks would be a life-saver. We could create the shapes from the book together. I bet he'd love it!

I think it could help my 2 year old nephew who is very used to being read to, but not actively reads (or acts as if he did), so I think this book/tool would help him follow the story and get the attention skills ready to start his reading skills.

I also like the similarity of the creatures with the real animal, but I like more the fact that they are not identical. Many toys nowadays reproduce reality so closely leaving no space for imagination or creativity.

Incorporating something he loves, likes legos, and adding in books (which he loves), would be a great tool to helping my son polish up his reading skills. This would be wonderful!

These are perfect for my grandsons, ages 3 & 5, and for the preschoolers in my class, who are 2 years old!

My one year old loves the big legos and we're trying to get her more interested in books so I think this would be a great way to capture her attention longer!

I think it could help my son with his attention span by giving him a reason to sit still and listen.

Kids learn to read by making patterns. Duplo blocks are great for that!

I think Lego Duplo Read & Build could help my children read from word association. Using the "green" block to build something is a fun and interesting way for them to learn and remember how to read. The bonus is my children love Lego anything!!

I've heard kids learn best when using more than one sense and this activity definitely uses lots of the senses at the same time. Looks like fun!

I think it will help my son with reading because he will be able to connect the pictures and what he can build with what the book is talking about.

Thanks for the chance to win!

Both my boys love Legos. I saved my sets from when I was younger and they play with those also. Lego Duplo Read and Build is an excellent idea for kids that are interested and reading and definitely for those that aren't. My oldest has fun putting together Lego sets using the instructions and making things off the top of his head. Legos in general are a great learning tool.

I think this is a great way to get a child to see and follow directions to build a fun toy. It especially appeals to the age when they are wanting to do more things on their own without as much Mom and Dad help.

While I do not have kids of my own, I would assume that just making reading a playtime activity is going to grab the kids attention more easily than making it a form of work.

These sets look wonderful! I read about them in a magazine and was so grateful to find this promotion. I have a fidgety 2.5 year old girl who could greatly benefit with this. She doesn't sit still when we read, and to have an interactive book would be provide a perfect learning environment for her. If we dont win, I can't wait to be able to purchase one in the future. It's on her Christmas/birthday list already.
