Birthday Weekend with the Steeces

We had SUCH an incredible weekend with Grampy, Grammy, Uncle Ed, and Sweet Jess--I ended up with over 200 pictures! It will be easier for me to post in separate installments---LOTS of info/material to cover.

Grammy and Grampy Steece arrived Friday afternoon so we headed out to dinner at the Oasis on Joe Pool Lake.

Joe helping Sav write her name

Love this pic of Ben and Grampy---Ben LOOOOVES his grandfathers, he's an old soul

Kate making Andrew laugh (I'm going to start calling him "giggles")

Sweet, little, loveable E-bud and me

Afterward, we headed out to feed the ducks and freakishly giant fish (anyone ever been to the Oasis? Holy COW those are some creepy fish!) Ben, Andrew, Ethan

The whole crew

Sav loves her shades! (Her eyes were still dilated from her trip to the eye doc earlier that day)

Speaking of the little princess...Miss Priss is going to be sportin' some super cute girly eye glasses in a week or so. Ever since we turned their carseats to face forward, I have noticed that her eyes cross when she is trying to watch the DVD player. It is a subtle crossing, but it just bothered me to the point where I knew something wasn't right. (You can kinda see it in this pic)

So, I took her to the eye specialist on Friday and sure enough---Savannah is far sided in both eyes. She is required to wear her eye glasses at all times while awake for the next 2 months. She will also have to wear a groovy pirate-eye-patch on her left eye for 2 hrs a day. This is to strengthen the muscles in her right eye (the weaker eye). If after 2 months, the crossing hasn't gotten better, then poor Sav will be off for another surgery! I know this is very common in little kids (especially preemies), but goodness gracious---the little darling just can't catch a break!

Next up: Putting Together Our New Swing Set; and the Quads Seeing their Billboard for the First Time!

The fish always creep me out there, but I guess that's what happens when you feed them a steady diet of french fries and leftovers from dinner!

Howdy! Oasis is awesome for atmosphere. Fish can be scary. And, I have been farsighted and amblyopic for most of my life. But, I never needed surgery. My husband's little cousin did, and he really benefited from it. Thinking of Sav. She's too adorable. I'm sure the specs will look stylishly-cute on her.

Ben's spiderman t-shirt in the pics is the same one my son has. Oh and him and my husband have the same name. Love your blog!

I'm sure you don't really need the kudos, but I'm so impressed that with all you have going on you still catch all the "details" that ensure that you have healthy kiddos. I'm sure it's hard on you and Joe, but your caution today will be such a reward when your kids are healthy and well in the future. You remind me that although I'm overwhelmed sometimes, I have to remember that my primary role is the protector of the family.

BTW - adorable photos!

Poor little lady. I hope her eyes will be corrected with the pirate patch and glasses. She will look darling in her little glasses. You should see if the pirate patch comes in a girly pink color.

Sweet Sav!! I'll be praying for!

And YES, I have seen those fish (when I lived in Duncanville before getting married we would go there a lot)..they ARE very freakish fish (that's a good word for them!).

I'm glad you guys had such a great time with all the celebrating! HUGS, girl!

Poor Sav, she really can't catch a break!! But hey, I was one of those little kids who wore eye glasses at a young age, I think I was a little younger than her actually!! She'll be so cute in her specs!! (I secretly think there is something extra cute about little kids with glasses, LOL) I also had eye surgery at the ripe old age of 2 years!! And that was back in 1987, I know this is a much more common problem now and I'm sure the surgery will go fine if she has to have one.

Interestingly, I still have some weird eye problems, but knowing exactly what the problems are I know how to compensate for them, so I don't need glasses anymore!! :D

I've been reading your blog for awhile and I just LOVE it!!! Your kiddos are so cute! I am also a former Aggie - but I only went 2 1/2 years before I got married and moved back to Dallas. We have been to the Oasis and yes...we have seen the freakishly large fish that flop all over each other to get to the food - crazy! My parents live on that lake - they have a very contemporary white box home there - my dad is an architect and he designed it! They too graduated from A&M - in fact, my mom was part of the class where they admitted the first females:) Ya'll are such a cute family! What a blessing your children are! I just feel for sweet Savannah, my daughter is going through issues with her kidneys as well, we've been through those tests and they are terrible! But we just keep trusting in God and know that he has plans for her! Congrats on having 2 year olds! May God richly bless you and your precious family!

Poor Little Sav...She is such a good sister. She's takin' on all the problems, so her brothers won't have to.
I had to start wearing glasses when I was a year and a half old.
She is so blessed to have a Mom that is so attentive to these things.
God Bless You Steece's!

Oh my goodness...I say it all the time, but their smiles just make my day!!
The fish are creepy at the Oasis..one of my favorite places to eat (and the view...WOW) but those are some creepy things! lol
Sorry to hear about her eyes..she will be adorable in her glasses though! Atleast she seems not to mind having other glasses on! Now it will just be trying to keep the 4 of them from losing them or breaking them! haha
Looking forward to the next few installments! ;)

My son Graham wears glasses as well. He's +6 farsighted. He took right to the glasses with no problem. He realized right away that the glasses were why he could see better, so he never took them off. They helped his development immensely as well. Good luck Sav, and mommy/daddy.

hi there....i'm just a girl from texas who LOVES your blog!!! when I was little, i had to wear the "groovy" eye patch until i was three and eventually had to have surgery...all is well now!!! sweet little savannah, i bet she will be a doll in her glasses!!!

I love all of the pictures! My sister had to wear eyeglasses at a young age and it corrected the problem so that she doesn't need to wear eye glasses now!

There is a place in Myrtle Beach, SC where you can feed fish like at Oasis. They are huge, rather creepy, and always starving!

The EXACT thing happened to me when I was a baby. I was a preemie with my twin brother. I'll be 30 in 2 weeks, still wear glasses. I've had the eye surgeries as well.

My left eye still wanders, but it's not noticeable to me anymore. And I have some super cool glasses now! LOL

If you have any ?'s about it you can email me

Happy Birthday to the quads. Poor Sav. Just comfort yourself with knowing that catching (the eye thing) this early you have avoided worse problems.

I do wish she would catch a break :)

My daughter has the same thing and has had surgery to correct it. She also has some kidney issues that I have commented about before. The surgery is successful, although we have noticed that Elyse Left eye is trying to go back but we will see the final position 9/1 at 12weeks post op. Good Luck, the surgery is simple and takes about 30 mins.

My daughter has had the surgery. I spoke in comments about my daughter's kidney surgery also. I guess the eye issue goes along with kidney issue. My daughte did great, we did surgery, we did not think that she would keep the glasses on. Her L eye starting to turn in a little at times, so she is trying to go back a little. She goes back 9/1 to check the final poition. Sorry if this a duplicate post was not sure if it went through.

Hi! I found your blog through linking through someone elses. It's been so much fun to read. Thank you for sharing your stories with the blog world:) I have 2 boys, and I'll never know how you do it with your 4! What a blessing.
My oldest son wears glasses as well. For far sightedness and strabismus as well. He's worn them since he was 2 (he'll be 4 at the end of this month) and he has done very well with his glasses. After trying to be really cute with some wire rims, we had to go the rubber rim route. I wanted him to look so cute, but the wire rims did not cooperate with his active lifestyle. However, we've been THRILLED with the glasses that he has been wearing for over a year now. They are MIRAFLEX glasses and they're virtually indestructible. We love them and they look so cute on him. (And they come in tons of colors. ) Just thought that might help if you need to search for something sturdy.

Suz,
I just wanted to suggest to you if the patch doesn't work, to talk to your doctor about medication to dilate Miss Sav's eye. My son Henry, who was a preemie, has issues with one of his eyes and we have been dilating his left eye every Friday for 6 months, to help strengthen his right eye. It seems to be working and might actually help Henry to avoid surgery.

ps The photos are adorable and little Miss sav in that dress! ADORABLE!

Looks like an awesome weekend!!

The Oasis has as always been a favorite place for DH and I. Mainly, because of the atmosphere and view... the food is just okay.

The fish have always been scary. And I guess last summer they put up the little fence so that you couldnt access them like you used to be able to. I am sooooo GLAD they did that though. I was always afraid a child would fall in and get devoured. LOL

Hi, I've followed for a long, long time, but I don't think I've commented before. My 5 yr old just got glasses and we are patching as well. The patches listed in a comment above are super cute--so much that my 3 yr old wanted to wear them too. Also - we got our glasses at Sams. The price was way better than anywhere else we checked out. Good luck!!! The kids are precious!!

Suz--
Was Savannah diagnosed w/ strabismus? My Savannah (now 13) had strabismus as a baby & had 4 surgeries to correct it. Let me know if ya want to chat. (email me--it's on my profile on here) My Savannah & I love your blog & live not too far from y'all! We'd be happy to share our experience w/ ya.

Hi Suz,
I have been following your blog ever since one of our Sunday School class members here in Houston put you all on the prayer chain when you were expecting. I have really enjoyed your posts! I feel compelled to put in my 2 cents on this one because I am a pediatric optometrist and vision researcher. Reading your post, I am hopeful that Sav will not have to have surgery for her eyes. When children are far-sighted, their eyes have to focus extra hard to see clearly, and as we focus hard, our eyes naturally turn in. The glasses will eliminate the need to focus and allow the eyes to stay straight, but if they do the trick, it will mean wearing the glasses as long as Sav stays far-sighted. The good news would be no surgery (we'll pray for that). The patching will help to improve the vision in the weaker eye, and you should definitely get some improvement in 2 months, but a maximum improvement may take as long as 6 - 12 months according to the research literature, so I would be hesitant to make a surgery decision at 2 months unless there was no improvement. Best of luck! Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. I hope this wasn't too much unsolicited advice. :-)

My oldest son had to wear an eye patch as well - we made it such a big deal telling him how awesome and cool he looked all the time! He loved it - and all the kids in his daycare class wanted one too! CUTE!
