My Daughter Sports a Femme-Mullet

Yep folks…I thought you all might enjoy a little Monday morning laugh at Savannah’s expense…

I was enjoying a nice little Saturday Christmas brunch with friends when I received a photo text from my dear, sweet husband- who was at home, “watching the kids”. (cough, cough)

Our overly sophisticated, smart as an 18 year old, sassy as a 13 year old, darling diva of a 3 year old daughter, had managed to give herself a haircut- using scissors that had been accidentally placed in the wrong drawer. (We had to move them months ago from curious toddlers who are much taller than they used to be).

Exhibit A:

sav's femme mullet frontal (2)

Joe claimed that Savannah pranced upstairs where he and the boys were watching Disney’s “Cars” (naturally)…and exclaimed, “Daddy! Daddy! Do you like my pretty haircut?!”

sav's femme mullet left side (2)

As she casually sat down to watch the flick, Joe caught a good look at her profile and thought, “oh jeez”…He ran downstairs to find several long clumps of hair on the kitchen floor and scissors laying on the counter.

sav's femme mullet right side (2)

Let me also take this time to mention that Savannah, at this point in the morning, had already gotten into my makeup bag and had given herself a makeover.

JOE! WHAT IN THE WORLD WERE YOU DOING WHILE I WAS GONE?!!!! He claims that he was “watching” a movie upstairs---but we all know that he had probably fallen asleep (doesn’t take much).

Winking smile

I laughed SO hard when I saw her…(she was SO proud of herself)…and I immediately gave her a quick lesson about why we do NOT play with scissors, nor try to give ourselves/brothers haircuts. EVERRRRRRRRRR! Then I took her to the salon to get “fixed”.

Its SHORRRRT! (and just when her hair was FINALLY getting long! It takes forever to grow!)

You KNOW its baaaaad when the hair stylist cannot stop laughing as she surveys the damage and tries to figure out how in the world can she manipulate the tattered remains into any type of feminine cut. She kept saying, “Oh hunnney (giggles)…you are going to make a great stylist someday! You even knew to cut hair from both sides. (giggle, giggle)”

There were no layers in the back, so of course- I had to come home and stack her bob. Turned out pretty cute.

Going to be wearing a lot of these:

IMG_1070-1

maybe even pierce those ears?…lol

A recap, because I cannot stop laughing at these pictures:

12 December 2010

So, I know that apparently this is a certain rite of passage that almost all girls go through at some time or another…(the majority at age 3?! What is up with that?!)

I am DYING to know your stories! Have your kids ever given themselves/siblings/others a haircut? Do tell!

Well her hair is precious! And YES my daughter when she was 3...cur her some bangs. She had really long long hair so I'm thankful it wasn't the back...but we had some side bangs for awhile. It wasn't terrible but she is 5 and they are still growing out to match the rest of her hair. But be relieved she has NEVER EVER even thought of trying to do that again. So no worries...little miss savi got this out our her system. So far my boys haven't tried it...so maybe you're good to go there.
Yep...earrings would look cute with that style!

The bob is adorable!!! That little face is so funny. Like "I'm proud of my cut but mommy wants to change it" look is priceless. Rock on Savannah!

OMGOSH Suz! Too funny!
At least she looks adorable after as well.

Long ago, my daughter gabi decided to shave her brother teddy's hair with the clippers (Teddy was about 2 at the time) She shaved off all of the hair straight down the middle! (and a few patches here or there.) It was AWFUL!

That is hilarious!!! The bob looks very cute now though. I was just thinking the other day I don't know how my oldest daughter (who is 5) managed to squeak by this rite of passage... guess there is still time or maybe daughter 2 will!!

LOL!! My kids are too young for that yet (I think! at 2?!) but I gave myself a haircut when I was 3. I had really straight hair and my mom used to cut bangs, so I thought I could cut my own REALLY SHORT bangs. THere are no pics of the dead, but it must have been freaky (and there is no fix for that one unless you think a 3yo girl can sport a zero hair cut! LOL)

Bwaaaahahaha! That is great! The stacked bob is adorable! The temporary mullet is definitely worth the story :) i haven't personally experienced this yet, but my girl is only 6 months old...i'm scared!

Lissa said...

Ahh..poor lil' girl.. I haven't had any experience with this, but your girl looks super cute with the bob haircut =] I don't think I could be that brave. My girl has hair down to her bottom and has had one haircut in her life. She's 7 now.

emily said...

oh her new 'do looks so cute! at least she did not chop off her bangs up to her scalp! my friends' daughter did that, and it was super tough to fix. they couldn't hide it. she just looks like she got a cute new haircut... it does not look like a fix from a self-haircut. :) my daughter (with LONG curly hair) just turned 4 and has yet to do this.... so i am hoping it won't happen. and watch... it will happen this week now.

I love Savannah's new hair style! I think it is precious!! You did a great job stacking it. I don't have any hair "styling" stories yet, but having two year old twins, I am sure I will eventually. :-)

I am one of your "lurkers" that has followed your blog for a couple of years now. My kids are grown and gone, but honestly cannot remember them being "artistic hairstylists" in their youth. Now, I do teach a 3-4year old Bible class and have had several, over the years, come in with "fancy dos." Mostly the boys, up in the crown of their head :-D One little boy told me his baby sister cut his hair (she was 6 months old at the time) so his momma wouldn't punish him!
The quads are precious (?) and their "activities" put a smile on my face :-)

Having the maiden name "Barber," my 5-year-old self and 3-year-old cousin, decided that I should obviously have some automatic talent for cutting hair so I took a chunk out of the middle back of her head.

I don't remember how it looked or if they even bothered to go get it fixed, but I do remember that her mother was not pleased.

I love the after pictures!!! Especially the one with the bow!!!

It looks beautiful...and it looks so thick with the new cut! I love it.

I laughed hysterically as I read your blog. My daughter was about that same age when she decided she needed a new hairstyle. In our case, she used a pair of those cheap plastic kids scissors that you really can't cut paper with! I knew she was doing an art project with her sister and thought nothing of it. She went to the bathroom and came out as proud as could be saying, "Look Mom, like my new hair?" Unlike your daughter, my daughter cut her entire bangs OFF!!!! Like right down to the hairline! It took forever to grow it back. She is now 24 and we still talk about that day when we get together. It was absolutely hilarious. By the way, I think she looks absolutely adorable with her "new look".

Terri said...

Yep! 3! The exact age my darling cut her locks! With the results much as you posted here! Sav's hair turned out VERY cute!

Anonymous said...

You know, I really like it! It looks thicker. How does Savannah like it? My story is, my SON took my husband's hair trimmer (that he uses to trim up his eyebrows, sideburns, etc) and completely shaved off one of his eyebrows. And he was very proud of it too. There's a reason we have eyebrows and you don't think you really need them but when you see your child with only one eyebrow, it looks very strange. And, he was about 3 at the time.

Having three girls myself, I can definitely tell you that Savi is totally normal in the cutting hair department. I found that my seven year old had tried to cut out her cowlick. Hopefully she's out of the hair cutting phase! :) Savi looks precious with her new 'do!

My daughter was at a birthday party and decided to cut her friend's hair. The kid's craft scissors work just as well on hair.

Savannah's hair looks super cute and will probably grow in thicker. At least she didn't cut her bangs really short.

I love it! My poor daughter has a femme mullet, but not because she cut it, the sides of her poor hair just won't grow! I'm waiting until it gets a little bit longer so I can cut it all one length into an adorable bob like Sassy Sav's!

I love it! My poor daughter has a femme mullet, but it's just because the sides of her poor hair will NOT grow! I'm waiting for it to get a little but longer do I can cut it into an adorable bob like Sassy Sav's!

She looks so much older! I remember when my sister gave our boy cousin a haircut. We were 4 & 5 at the time. Our moms were not impressed! Easier to fix a boy's hair than a girl though. But her hair cut is cute with the stacked bob and headband!

ASHENFELTERS said...

Well, first off. I think her new hair is quite adorable!
My daughter, at 3( of course)
cut ALL of her bangs off...not something you can fix!!!
She's 10 now, and still some of the hair is not grown out with the rest!:)

Collins Family said...

Oh Suz her hair is precious. Actually yes I have a recent one too. Isabelle who is only 3 days younger than Sav found scissors last week the day before her Nutcracker performance. Yes the night before dress rehearsal she comes to me and has hair in her hand and said "Mommy my bangs were getting to long" Luckily she did a good job! It took me 2 days to really figure where she cut it. She cut her bangs but must have pulled them up and cut from underneath and right at the scalp. So we were fortunate 2 days before her dance performance that you could not tell! Sav's new haircut is precious but I know what you mean it takes forever to get their hair to grow and just as it is getting long this happens! Hope the boys do not try to copy their sister anytime soon!

Charity Donovan said...

Oh Savannah! At least she left her bangs long...she could have went with car-crash bangs...OMG!!! The end result is is actually REALLY cute! I think it was her sneaky way of saying "I like my hair short & sassy, just like my pretty momma's! Thank you very much!" LOVE her & love you momma!

Elizabeth said...

Tfinal product is actually really cute. My brother cut off the ONLY curl I ever had...on my mom's birthday. I think he gave it to her, and she cried (not tears of joy). Haha. Oh well!

Shosh said...

My two oldest are boys and they have both cut their hair but thankfully nothing too drastic...but my daughter is 3 and she has gorgeous curly hair and I live in FEAR of her cutting it off! It takes forever to grow as it is. A friend of mine has a kid with gorgeous long hair and a day before a big family party her son cut it ALL OFF of his little sister.
I think Sav looks adorable though! love the new do!

Jennifer said...

I think her bob looks adorable! And just to make you feel better, I babysat a little girl and her hairdresser said that if you keep their hair shorter, it will help it to become thicker. So maybe Sav will have thick hair one day if she keeps this up!

I did the same thing at 3 except I cut off one of my two pig tails...all the way off, from the top! My mother was so sad about it. She said she will never forget seeing my whole pigtail laying on the stairs. lol. I was rocking an afro for little while, which had just gone out of style by 1984. :) However, the stunt did result in getting my ears pierced. Suz, I think you just have a future diva/ fashion stylist on your hands - like me!

I've been reading your blog for more than two years but I don't remember if I ever had left a comment before.
Once, when I was a little girl (probably 5) I was caught in a room in my house trying to cut my cat's hair between her two ears. I was there with the door closed so no one could find me (for that I assume I was aware that what was doing wasn't right). Fortunately for my poor cat, they found me before I cut her a ear, only hair was cut!

Just yesterday at noon I was waiting outside a hair salon to get my daughter in and get hers fixed! She whacked her hair and we were going to the Winspear Opera house last night so she needed to look presentable! Hers was super short on one side and shorter on the other so it was lopsided. We ended up with a bob too. She looks so cute with a bob though so I was happy to have her a new hairstyle. She was so proud of herself for cutting her own hair, it was hard getting on to her for it!

Jenny said...

When I was about 5 I found some scissors and cut my own eyelashes!! My mom was so mad at me!

Rhonda said...

Oh yes, I remember well when my dear darling daughter gave herself a haircut. But I must insert that she wasn't trying to cut her hair. She was working on some crafts with a new pair of scissors. She had an itch behind her ear. Instead of putting the scissors down, she kept them in her hand in the open position and proceeded to scratch all the while cutting her hair about 6 inches! It was military hair short on one side! Funny thing was, she didn't even know she had cut her hair, nor did we. She was busy working on her craft. I happened to see something on the floor and bent down to pick it up only to discover it was hair. Didn't even occur to me it could be my daughter's hair until I looked at her closely. She was in absolute shock just as much as we were! I can look back on the whole thing (it was about 16 years ago now) and laugh now, but I wasn't laughing then. I was freaking out because she had such beautiful hair. Needless to say, we had to get her hair fixed. It wasn't quite as short as Savannah's but it was still short.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane for me!

BTW Savannah's hair is super cute!

Typical 3 year old? :) It has been a long time since the son is grown (29) years. But he cut his hair and actually tried to blame it on the poor dog. He took a huge chunk right out of the middle of his bangs. Oh and one time when I fell asleep, we both were suppose to be napping. Ha Ha. He picked at a whole in the drywall that was the size of a pin hole, by the time he was done it was the size of a small crater, clear down to the plaster and lathe boards. Needless to say I just moved the bed to cover the whole tell we could explain later to Dad what happened. :) I just love reading the stories of your quads. Sherri

Your daughter's new hair cut is so cute! When my daughter was 3 she cut off her bangs down to the roots. When they grew out they stood straight up like a mohawk! At 5, she cut off her pony tail which left a gaping hole in the back. Both times the hairdresser laughed the entire time she "fixed" my baby's hair! When I was 7 (yes, 7) I used nail scissors and cut off my eyebrows. I was the only second grader whose Mom had to pencil my eyebrows in every day. All you can do is laugh.

I gave myself "bangs" (something very similar to what Savannah did) a week before my Aunt and Uncle's wedding where I was the flower girl.

Suzanne, be thankful you have such an adorably feminine lil' girl! Truly, her short bob is DARLIN'! Rauly has done that - twice. The first time I cried - she'd never had a hair cut before she decided to chop off her own locks...the second time she did it, I just covered my mouth and tried to not let her see me laughing. ;-p

Hilarious! I love the new bob, though! Elizabeth cut my bangs for me...very, very short bangs. :) My mom was not happy with her! I was in elementary school, so she must have been in junior high or high school!

My kids never did this - amazingly - but I do have many other stories on them.

My niece cut my other niece's hair when they were little. She actually cut it AT THE SCALP and left her little sister with nothing but little bird tufts all over her head. It was really bad.

Savannah's hair turned out really cute and thank goodness you are laughing about it.

My little cousin cut her own hair when she was 5-ish and when her mom asked, "Why did you do that?" her response was "The devil made me do it." Ha! Savi's hair looks super cute with the bob!

Unknown said...

Yes, 3 seems to be the magic #. I was 3 when my cousin played Barber on my hair on Christmas day! My mom says I was bald until I was 3...then that winter, I had to go short again! ha! My mom and Aunt still tell the story all the time and my cousin and I are 33! They both joke that they aren't sure who cried harder when they realized what had happened.

Sav's bob looks super cute though! (nice work on stacking it!) At least she cut it relatively evenly on the sides and not one huge chunk out of the middle/front/top!

Oh Goodness! But, it could've been much worse!

I have 3 sisters, and we've all done it. But the "episode" that comes to mind is when i was 4 or 5. I used to twirl my hair at night, and I got my hair in a giant knot and couldn't get it out. So instead of asking my mother to help, I just cut the knot out...and blamed my sister. She got a spanking. And I didn't come clean till years later! Poor thing...although, I'm sure she deserved it for something! lol

Savannah is precious! It is a rite of passage for sure.

When I was 3 and my older sister was 4 we decided to play barber shop. She chopped off my bangs as close to my head as she could get. When we came upstairs to "show mom" she lost it. Picture were, of course, coming up at preschool and she was devastated. My preschool picture is hilarious because my hair is in some sort of high fashion beehive bouffant. Good times. :)

My oldest daughter cut her hair when she was about three also. She cut off her bangs right to the scalp. Impossible to "fix"!

When I was about six, I was in the bathroom getting ready for my bath (alone). I found bright red nail polish and painted my lips. But, I did not stay on my lips very well and when I was down I had bright red clown lips. I remember looking in the mirror and thinking....uh oh, I am in big trouble. I got in the tub and when my mom came into the bathroom to check on me she asked "what did you do the your lips!" I just acted like I had no idea what she was talking about. I still remember that night- she had to scrub my lips with nail polish remover. It is funny now- not so funny at the time.

On my daughter's 2nd day of kindergarten I put her long hair in 2 adorable french braids. When she got home from school that afternoon there was a thick piece of hair sticking out of one of the braids right at the crown of her head. When I asked why her hair looked like that she informed me that one of her tablemates had "pretended" to cut her hair. Well it wasn't so pretend! When I unbraided her hair a thick strand of hair, about 6 inches long, fell out. Fortunately, her hair is thick and we were able to hide the damage pretty easily. Needless to say, the teacher didn't know it had happened and there were lots of talks about appropriate scissor use! :)

Somehow I didn't get the honor of my daughter cutting her hair. ALTHOUGH, I did get the honor of my 5 year old son attempting to shave on his own. He used a razor of mine that I accidentally left in the kids bathroom when the master bathroom was going through fixer-upper times. His face was so bloody and nasty. It hurt pretty bad, and looked bad too, but he now knows that razors are only for grown ups.

Oh, my! That's some haircut she gave herself! At least the end result turned out really cute. I love short bobs on little girls! My son has always had longer short hair (Think the Beatles early days), and one day he grabbed a chunk in the front and cut it all the way to the roots. He had a nice, one inch spot missing in front for the longest time, so we just tried our best to move the surrounding hair around it. And if that wasn't a lesson learned... he did it again AT SCHOOL one day! Same place! Turns out that safety scissors do cut hair!

Charla (SHar-la) said...

Well, the "fixed" result looks GREAT! Precious! And I love headbands, so that's another plus! And yes, absolutely have the cut your own hair story. 4 years old, and I pulled the front of my hair and just took a big swipe out of it. I must have cut some off the back, too, because my "fixed" result was my very first Dorothy Hamil do...all the way around bowl, bangs and all! I don't think it was as cute as Sav's, but it worked. And if I remember right, Mom said it was right before some big event, too. I have to say, I love how in the first set of pics, she looks pitifully sad and depressed. And then in the second, she's jolly and giddy! HA!

I had this exact haircut for about 2 years. Except it wasn't of my own doing. And to top it off, my mom gave me a perm with the mullet. So my 2nd and 3rd grade photos of the snaggle toothed permed mullet version of me NEVER are allowed to surface. We still joke about it to this day. The funny thing is, I could have cared less then. I don't even think I noticed one time. Needless to say, if I ever have a little girl, her hair will be kept in perfect little bows and she will never have a mullet!! I like the new 'do. She looks like a mini version of you now :)

Oh my gracious that is funny and the new do is super cute!

My mom did something similar when she was a child. My grandmother had my mom grow her bangs out for a wedding that she was to be the flower girl in and two days before the wedding cut them super short aka non-salvageable. My grandmother was very upset but that was the day when all the attendants and flower girls wore the same clothes, make-up, and hairstyles. There are worse things :-)

I love her new bob haircut.

My daughter (3 yrs at the time) decided to cut her brother's hair (7 months) with child proof scissors while he was in an exersaucer. She was so proud of herself. My son had an awesome mohawk at the time and after the sistercut it never went into a mohawk again. So sad.

I love her new haircut, too! Allegedly, I cut off one of my younger sister's pigtails when we were little (I say allegedly because I have no recollection of it and there are no photos anywhere of my sis with short hair or another haircut that would have been to mask the damage).....

my mom when she and her college roomie have too many cocktails often try to trim her hair so I guess some ppl never outgrow it! haha

Good job (and call) on the layers. The new cut looks great. So far (knock on wood) my almost 4 year old hasn't cut her own hair. A little girl in her class did and they had to cut her hair as short as a boy. A friend's daughter did it too a couple months before she turned four. The poor thing had to have ALL her hair cut to 1" or less. I caught her with a pair of scissors a couple days ago and was ready to string her out. Thankfully nothing was cut, but it's been a BIG fear of mine. I do a lot of sewing and have worried that my hobby could cost her - her hair.

But thanks for this post - its a good reminder for me b/c my daughter just turned 3 in November - I will have to make sure to keep all the scissors in the house under lock & key ;)

I have 8 children. Seven of them have cut their hair. One is still too young. The scissors are always suppose to be put up. It only takes one "mistake" and there the hair goes. My oldest was the "best". She was SOOOO proud of herself. It was so bad that it could not be fixed (chopped to the scalp in places and she managed to get both sides AND the back). However, she looked very cute in a hat!

My sister cut a chunk out of the middle of her bangs 2 weeks before she was a flower girl in my aunt and uncle's wedding. Debbie Cooper had to try and fix it. Good thing it was the early 90s and we could curl and poof the rest of her bangs to try and cover it. Used lots of hairspray on that one haha!

My son cut a big chunk out of the top of his head....thankfully he only cut his own. We were about to head out the door going somewhere, we had to make a quick run for the barber shop. Thankfully on boys you can just get their hair cut a little shorter and it's all fixed. That's the only incident we've had. My poor little niece messed her hair up totally...it eventually grew out-I think she cut her sister's, too.
Savannah's hair is precious, by the way. =) Love it.
